extracting data from a large text file??

hi there, i'm new to this forum and i'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've got a large text file with lots of data poorly arranged and i want to extract a number from each line. The numbers are in decimal form, 6.5, 7.2 etc.

Does anyone know how to do this?

So far i've been using textpad and trying to retrieve the numbers using the regular expression search and replace function. but i'm not very good at reg exp's...i don't know how to retrieve just the numbers i want and how to repeat the search for every line in the file?

Well, hope that makes some sense.
