Internet doesn't work on a single linux distro I've tried so far, and I'm 100% convinced that the reason is this:
Quote:
There's no word of Linux in the list of supported operating systems, so I'm convinced it's not supported either. So, now I'm supposed to manually configure Linux to do the job. The problem is, I really don't know where to go from here... all info I could find on manual configuration was following list: Network Service Service Settings Primary Domain Name Server 211.29.132.12 Secondary Domain Name Server 198.142.0.51 Domain Name Suffix optuszoo.com.au POP3 (incoming) Mail Server mail.optusnet.com.au (port 110) SMTP (outgoing) Mail Server mail.optusnet.com.au (port 25) NNTP (news) Server news.optuszoo.com.au (port 119) Time (NTP) Server time.optusnet.com.au WebSpace FTP Server (Host) members.optuszoo.com.au (port 21) myZOO Home Page www.optuszoo.com.au Your Email Address username@optusnet.com.au http://www.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl <- link to online help So...my question is, what to do? Anyone have any idea as to how to configure my internet on Linux? I've tried Ubuntu (7.04) and Knoppix, no luck with either distro. These difficulties with the internet have been keeping me from switching to Linux, I've been running Ubuntu on a Virtual Machine but since I don't have a VT-enabled CPU, I really can't get the most out of it... plus, under Virtual Box, the screen resolution is limited to 1024*768 whereas I'd like it to run fullscreen. Kinda annoys me. Oh and btw, I'm on DSL, the modem's hooked up via an ethernet cable. Not w/less. Also, when I ran the DSL/PPPoE config tool in Knoppix, it came up with some error message about "Access Concentrator" and that the modem might be controlled by some other PPP thing or something along those lines... Can anyone help me? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() EDIT: Just wanted to add that I've never had any trouble with the net when running Linux in a VM.

are you loading linux and trying to put in a cd that came with the modem? my moden AND router came with "required" software cds, and linux automatically detected the connection with no cds or other software/drivers.

Well, I haven't tried the CD, as it said that it isn't supported anyways... it seems kinda strange to me, too, that Linux ain't detecting the connection. I might try the CD and see what it does... I'll probably also try hooking the modem up via USB and see if it does the trick. In the meantime....
anyone else? suggestions? advice? Oh and btw, I've only tried the internet while loading a distro off Live CD... do I need to install Linux to get it working?
