Default Onboard video went bad. Problem...

Well, my new video card arrived today--it is a pci express 16x card. I installed the card, and now I have ran into a problem. The whole reason i bought the card was because my on-board video went out. Now I am told that I will have to turn that off in the bios in order for this to work. I have built many computers, and have never ran into this problem. I am not really sure what to do, I can't really afford a new motherboard. Any suggestions?

A dedicated card usually overrides the onboard, it's only the rares cases when it doesn't. Are you certain this is the problem? Have you checked your mobo manuals (you can usually find them online if you don't have them) to see if there is a VGA jumper you can use instead?

Onboard video now-of-days is built into the chipset. Should it die, typically the whole board is toast. My guess is either the board died (unless you can confirm it's loading an OS).

As for changing onboard settings, you shouldn't have to do anything unless you were using standard PCI, where onboard would typically still be running.
