I was wondering if this could be a go: 2x WD Raptor X 150GB in RAID0 for speed with programs, and then RAID1 (mirror) those 2 drives with a WD640GB to back those all up, and then partition the rest of the 640GB drive so it could be used for storage! Does this seem like a good idea? Can it even be done? Any pitfalls in this set-up? Thanks for the help.

well, i'm not sure from a hardware standpoint, but i know you could swing it in Windows as a Software RAID. The only catch there is that you already have to have windows installed on a Partition first for this to work. It seems kind of odd. it's almost like a RAID 10 (1+0), but not quite. I don't really know. there's only one way to find out for sure. another thing you might consider is RAID 5. that's a stripe with parity. if, for the sake of argument, you had THREE 150GB Raptors, you could have one of those drives as parity. basically you could rebuild if any one of your drives failed, but not 2. With 3 Raptor 150s you would have a total of 300GB of Available space.

i think its called raid five, but you would be best with going for hard drives close to the size of the raptors, because i think the backup will only show 150gb or 300gb, or 74gb, whatever size you use

To raid 0+1 (or 1+0) with hardware controllers you need 4 drives minimum. I don't know what you need for software raid though. A raid 5 is striping + parity, you need 3 drives and can be recovered if only 1 drive fails. It's all in RAID101.
