Companies do that so the gamers will get excited about it. I wait for a confirmed release date before I pre-order anything.

They always do that. Take a look at Starcraft II, they released some trailers last year and it still has for December until it's released.

Well what kinda game we talking about? If you want a good single player Race type game then go fo LFS (Live for Speed). It is a very light weight game and you can play it on the crappiest of systems. Heck I use to get around 100-120fps with the old Integrated 6150SE that I had. Now I get about 220-240fps with my 8600gt.
