Default Home Video Problem

A friend copied my home movies for me as i want to convert them over from the VCR to DVD and this seemed the best way. He has a built in Hard drive VCR. However the disk properties say that RAW files are on the CD. When i go to see content the disk reads empty. How can I extract the files to my comp. so that i can work on them and save them as either AVI or DVD? If program converters/readers exist whats a good Free one?
thx
spog
