For java you can use this book: http://www.odioworks.com/download/TI...edition4.0.zip
It's free because it's not the newest version. It will still work with new versions of java but it wont cover topics like generics.

I would like to make clear, that no matter what anyone else says, do not use VB. It's a simple language which is great, but the syntax does not resemble many other programming languages. It can screw you up. Anyway, if you are set on Java, I would go ahead and use the For Dummies books. I prefer those for anything I've learned in the past.
