Talking Java?

ok so cos im always bored i decided it would be good to start learning a computer language... my friend advised java and told me i should download eclipse.

so i did and never really got round to learning it.

basically i want to know if java would be the best thing for me to start learning, keep in mind i dont have a specific usage for language i learn. just what would be best to start with?

and if you think java then is there any site that has like a step by step guide so i can learn java?

thanks

For java you can use this book: http://www.odioworks.com/download/TI...edition4.0.zip

It's free because it's not the newest version. It will still work with new versions of java but it wont cover topics like generics.

I would start with C#. If you are really ambitious, go with C++. They aren't as easy to learn as a first language. Java would be only my third choice.

I would like to make clear, that no matter what anyone else says, do not use VB. It's a simple language which is great, but the syntax does not resemble many other programming languages. It can screw you up.

Anyway, if you are set on Java, I would go ahead and use the For Dummies books. I prefer those for anything I've learned in the past.
