Default External HD giving me fits

Ok, I'm going to include a lot of information, but try to keep it short. I'm tired of advice from friends that goes, "did you try restarting your computer?" Grrr. I'll tell you everything that happened so far and hopefully you can get me through this.

-Win XP pro, SP2, up to date
-Maxtor 1-touch 120GB external HD, working perfectly on this computer
-A month ago, the HD died. Wasn't spinning, got hot, and I got I/O error when I tried to access it.
-Yanked the fried IDE HD out and replaced it with a known-working 80GB IDE drive.
-fired it up, HD spins and makes the right noises, light comes on, and I get the tone that windows has recognized hardware getting plugged in.
-the My Computer window DOES NOT display it as a drive.
-Device Manager DOES display it as a drive called "Maxtor USB mass storage device."
-I uninstalled it from Device manager, then reinstalled it. Same thing.
-I removed all of the Maxtor software, as well as the Retrospect backup software, then re-did the uninstall/reinstall from Device Manager. Same thing.

Let me tell you what I get when I check Properties from Device Manager:
-Under the General tab, I get "this device is working properly," and "Use this device (enable)"
-Under the Volumes tab I get Disk: 5, Type: unknown, Status: Not initialized, Partition status: Not applicable, Capacity: 76317MB... But under the volumes list, there aren't any listed.
-Under the last tab there are too many things to list. The one thing that caught my eye was that the location was listed as "0"

HEEEELLLLLLLPPP! I'm tearing my hair out. Why does it have to be so insanely complicated? I consider myself vaguely savvy, but Devnode flags, Class Coinstallers, and Installer IDs just make me want to vomit.
