If I understand it right, it's single player, but some of the creatures you encounter will be created by other people (you download lots of stuff).

As I understand, you first choose what "type" of environment you want to play in, I think you can choose from Microscopic levels to Outerspace monsters. Then you create your creatures from a variety of options and body parts and then you can play with them online, interact with other people's monsters that live in the same environment you chose.

I think that's how it goes. And as of now, you can download the free trial of Spore Creature Creator which is just the "creating" part of the game, you don't get to play online.
