Can you tell us which Operating systems you are trying to network here?
Also, phone cords will not do. We need LAN/crossover cables to plug into the NIC.

Are you running a Windows? If so, then which version?
For example, are you running Windows XP or are you running a Windows Vista?
Please tell me the Windows versions on both the computers.

are you sure that she wasn't talking about ethernet. they look similar except that ethernet has a wider jack. i can assure you that you will not network computers using a standard phone cable. see if it plugs into a phone. if it does, you've got the wrong cable. if it's too big, you've got the right cable. it's just that simple. after that, we have to determine if you have a straight through cable or a crossover.
