I have not built a computer before. I am interested in attempting to build my own; preferably a laptop. I have heard that building a personal computer from scratch is much more inexpensive than actually buying one. I have a moderate knowledge base to work from dealing with computers. I have minimal experience with hardware but I generally know what parts provide what function.
Is building a laptop even something I should attempt without having built a desktop before? My questions are, Where should I shop for parts? Is www.newegg.com a decent priced store? Are there any books or online tutorials any of you can recommend? What is the price range I will be looking at for a quality computer? I don't need a computer that has cutting edge quality on everything. I am looking for a computer I can use for college in the fall. I have the majority of the software I will use, including the operating system and microsoft products. Is this even worth the time investment? New laptops are $450 plus rebates. What price range would I be looking at for building my own laptop? Thank you! |

You can't really 'build' a laptop by assembling the parts yourself because everything on them are sort of customized to fit only a certain way.
However if you go to a company like dell or hp etc. You can customize what parts you want in it. |

maybe that would be a help? You can customize all hardware inside of it. And there is the option to build it yourself.

Laptops can be difficult to be custom made. Many parts can be difficult to assemble because it can't fit in another brands compartments like the laptop video driver. Many computer owners have switched to another laptop video driver for their gaming purposes but having difficulties in installing the parts. I would say that only the desktop can be custom made.
