Default problem with secondary monitor connected to laptop

I have a problem with an Acer x223w 22' monitor connected to my HP 6710b laptop. I used this monitor for months and it worked fine. For a while I used the laptop without the monitor, because I was away. Now that I am back, the resolution (1680x1050) is not displayed! I did not change anything (drivers etc.). How can I fix this?

Graphics card is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family and I have win XP SP2.
As I said the monitor worked perfectly with the present configuration. I changed nothing but still the appropriate resolution is not shown.

I just installed the monitor driver, but produced no effect. No other update was performed. Although I searched for an update for the grafics driver there wasn't any.
OS = XP pro

I reinstalled the graphics driver: no change
I installed driver for the monitor: no change

The situation is desperate and VERY anoying, since the damn thing worked perfectly since last week. Today it is all messed up for no apparent reason. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance!
