Absolutely buy a new one, even the most budget computers will most likely blow yours away if it's more than a year old for not much more.

Thank you all for your responses. I bought my Toshiba in March 2007. It has an 80GB HDD, 512 mb RAM (which I know now that I should have added more). The USB ports are 1.0 because the other ones broke and since it was still under warranty, they were too cheap to give me 2.0 like it originally came with. Actually, the laptop has given me problems since I got it, but I was not complaining, as it was better than nothing.

It's just, if I bought the new mobo, I would have my laptop now. But if I decide to get a new laptop for $500, I'll have to wait until I get the money. Who knows when that will be.

But I'm still open-minded. I just want to make the best investment.

Thanks again. Keep those opinions coming!

BTW, if I end up selling the busted laptop on ebay, should I reformat the HDD? It has Vista though. And Microsoft Word 2003.

That is a very good idea. Is there any way to password block that, or any external/portable hard drive for that matter?

There are programs that will password protect your data, or toss it in one giant encrypted disk image. Google should point you to a bunch of them.
