Default I want a new laptop !?

I want a new laptop for myself , I could really use some expert advice. The only thing about computers I'm good at is sitting in front of it 3hrs a night cruisin the www.
Ideally about a $1000. budget . But somewhat flexible .
Heres my deal ..... this laptop will go from home everyday to work and back.

I check emails throughout the day .

Crusie the web about 3 hrs a day looking at motorcycles, parts, machinery , etc.

Store lots of pics.

no gaming.

It must be tough for a shop environment. (cold , hot , lightly dusty)

Want to take on trips.

Withstand cold weather.

Waterproof???

Drop proof???

Ask me anything else that i should be telling you about my use. Thank you, doug

Well, lenovo laptops are praised for their overall quality. The thinkpad is their main line of laptop. They have metallic roll cages, like race cars, and they have spill-holes to let liquid out of the laptop. They are usually a little more expensive than your average acer/dell, but their warranties and quality are much better in my opinion. Plus they have great deals.

Thanks for the fast replies ! Sounds like i am already liking the Thinkpads . Anything with a rollcage and spill holes sounds like it was made for me. I reviewed there website , but there is two many choices. I would like it to be fast and have Verizon broadband capabilities. What should i get? Thanks doug

The thinkpad t61 looks like a good choice for under $1000. Not the T61p, the T61.

It doesn't have a great graphics card, but it will run vista ok.

I'm liking the Lenovo for its toughness and keypad. Heres one I see at Office Depot. Does this look like it is priced fair??

I am also looking at the HP listed above at Newegg. it looks to have alot of good features for less money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834147743
Still looking for opinions , thank you, doug

Maybe a macbook.

http://www.apple.com/macbook/

$1,299.00 - white would be good as it has a super drive (burn dvds) or get the 1,099.00 which has a combo drive (Reads CD/DVD burns CD).

I check emails throughout the day - Mail Application is quite nice if your using gmail or yahoo etc. as in windows email you have to enter the whole .stmp thing

Crusie the web about 3 hrs a day looking at motorcycles, parts, machinery , etc. - Safari works nice fast and secure and has only ever 4 viruses on the web that strikes mac.

no gaming. - Why I didn't point you to a macbook pro which has a dedicated GPU

Store lots of pics - 160GB HDD and iPhoto will help you organize them better and put them in albums + Time machine with hourly backups if you get an external drive your photos will always be saved and be able to restore them faster than windows which require doing a restore point on the DVD.

t must be tough for a shop environment. (cold , hot , lightly dusty) - Their tough for the shop environment. again carbon plastic or something

Want to take on trips.
- Of course its only 13.3'' screen and 1.3'' thick

Withstand cold weather. - for every laptop and computer the colder it is the better it might run (most laptops get hot and start to freeze)

Waterproof??? - Lets be honest what laptop is water proof. Sure it can stand some amount of water but if the bottom of it hits water be 100 meters away from it. Or you can get a special cover when its not being used which is water proof.

Drop proof???
A Solid state drive is shock proof if it's really essental you might have to look at a 7/8.9'' EEE PC.
