Default Cpu 100% ???

A short while ago I started a thread here to help me diagnose a problem with installing Windows onto my new computer.

http://www.computerforum.com/124656-...p-doesn-t.html

Turns out that the problem had nothing to do with drivers or my memory. Apparently what has been happening is as soon as I booted from a disc my CPU was going to 100%.

I managed to install Vista 64 bit (after 15 hours) and when I got in I opened task manager, looked at the performance graphs and found that every 6 seconds my CPU spiked to 100% and the rest of the time it was about 60-70%.

So now I have a new problem and was hoping I could get some help. Why would my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0 GHz processor be going to 100% with virtually no load on it, and what can I do to fix the problem?

Thanks,
Taco

Wow - basically forget everything mentioned in that other Thread.

For most things, you'll *never* notice a difference between IDE and SATA, and if an Install Disc is corrupted, you'd know it. For the IDE/SATA issue, it's a BIOS setting you just need to switch.

Have you double-checked to make sure everything is kosher HSF-wise? Installs use a lot of CPU power at times; if the HS was off just barely (not enough to see, but enough to create a small gap) you're CPU might be getting warm enough to scale back, but not hot enough to shut down. This may sound odd, but do you have another CPU to drop in and try an Install? If it's quicker, then it's possibly just a dud CPU - they pop up every so often (kind of like the opposite of Factory-Freak engines).

that was my original thought even though I put on thermal compound and secured the hs really well. I took it off and put it back on - I'm pretty sure there is no gap in there.

I'm going to re-seat the cpu because of the pinless design it might be sitting wrong, but if that doesn't help it might be a bad cpu. I don't really have another one to try, but might be able to get one from a friend tomorrow.

Does it happen when you drag windows?
If so you mite not have installed your graphics card drivers.
Either at all or properly.
Just a thought.

I got it working!!!

I restored default settings in the bios and everything (well almost everything) works perfectly now. Booted to desktop in 5 seconds.

Now I just have to figure out how to have my disk drives read discs cause vista tried to format the discs. It says there is data on the discs, but then asks if I want to create a new disc when I open them. Weird huh? Probably just a driver issue.

Thanks for the help. This is a good forum.

No problem.
Hope you stick around.
And remember if you ever have anymore problems don't hesitate to make a thread.
