Sorry but i dont really understand why u posted this thread when you just go on to answer your own question...

Anyway i would go C2D for the same reason as houseofbugs.

i would go quad. i dont care about future proofing. but with my q6600 its not like im heaps disappointed with its performance in games...
its an all round beauty haha you can overclock a quad heaps anyway. so its not like it matters in the end.

If a quad were well utilized, then it would definitely be the way to go, but from my understanding, no programs really utilize a quad core, and so it rarely makes any difference having extra cores. For most peoples use at least, maybe not for professionals.

Seems right now C2D may perform slightly better in modern/older games, but C2Q is definitely here to stay, and is already showing its strength in newer games.

I hate to bring up Crysis once again, but it shows us that Core 2 Quad processors can be utilized and can certainly make a difference in performance.

Quad, oneday, when dual-cores become slower with newer apps, quad cores will come up front.
