Default Have to reset computer to make drive work??

I have a strange problem with a Benq DVD ROM drive and a NEC DVD writer. It seems that to make them read a CD or DVD you have to reset the computer with a CD or DVD in the drive, otherwise it just won't read the media, am I just mad or is this a hardware/software problem?

Thanks.

Thats really strange....i think the first place to start would be to make sure one is set to master and the other as slave. It sounds as if there is not a physical problem with the drives but some sort of software conflict. If that does not help, lemme know.

I have swapped the master and slave round on both and also changed the way the wire connects to it but nothing. I still have to start the computer with cd's or dvd's in!

Have you tried putting them on separate IDE channels; assuming your configuration allows you to do that

you could always look for firmware updates for these drives. check the manufacturer's website for each drive... be very careful you get the exact model tho. Do they work OK on their own?
