Default ForceWare drivers..

So not too long ago I upgraded my nVidia 8800GTS (G80)'s drivers from 169.04 to 177.40. The change between the drivers was smooth, and was confirmed using nVidia control panel. However, just recently I checked my driver, and it had reverted back to the 169.04 (?). I went into device manager and rolled back my driver, which to my surprise, brought me back to 177.40.
My question is, what could have made my driver go back to 169.04 after it successfully installed, and how could I prevent that from happening again?
