After years of using the 2005 Norton AntiVirus (yes I know that was a very stupid move) without updating it, I started using AVG Free + Spybot Search & Destroy. AVG Free found 2 Trojan horses + Spybot Search & Destroy found a whole lot of Adware/Spyware (70-something)
Now when I scan AVG Free, it always has a list of stuff that are under infections/threats called "Tracking Cookies" if I remember correctly, what are these? Just wondering, since I just ran the scan yesterday which picked up a lot (around 100) and when I scanned again today it picked up 2. What are these? Now I know that Windows comes with its own Firewall called Windows Firewall (I'm using XP), and I'm wondering how good this is against the Free ones? I'm using Firefox (which I heard has like it's own protective abilities or something) and I'm looking for a Free Firewall that is better than the original Windows Firewall. Any suggestions? Do I need to remove Windows Firewall to install another Firewall? How to do you do that? Last edited by KJS; 07-22-2008 at 01:02 AM. |

I recommend Comodo Firewall.
It's free or you can pay for it. And it's really awesome. When in paranoid mode it won't let the computer do anything without you telling it to.

Thanks, I've heard of Comodo Firewall. Anyone else?
I now need to know whether or not I need to uninstall Windows Firewall and how do I do that? Also, I've read that Comodo Firewall is a bit heavy on resources. Last edited by KJS; 07-22-2008 at 01:09 AM. |

Thanks, found out how to disable the firewall from Windows website:
"Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 Note A firewall is designed to help protect your computer from attack by malicious users or by malicious software. Malicious software includes viruses that use unsolicited incoming network traffic to attack your computer. Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect your computer from all networks, including the Internet. To do this, follow these steps: 1. In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections. 2. Right-click the connection on which you want to disable ICF, and then click Properties. 3. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Protect my computer or network check box. Disable Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2 Note A firewall is designed to help protect your computer from attack by malicious users or by malicious software. Malicious software includes viruses that use unsolicited incoming network traffic to attack your computer. Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect your computer from all networks, including the Internet. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK. 2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK." |
