Overclocking trouble
I have the Q6700, and I'm trying to overclock it the 3.0Ghz, however am unable to do so. Shouldn't I be able to overclock this thing without changing the voltage? Or is my 800MHz RAM bottle necking it.

You should be able to hit 3GHz without raising the voltage, but it's not a guarantee. Have you tried raising it to 2.8GHz, 2.9GHz, etc., or did you just bump it up to 3GHz and try it?

yea, I tried 2.8(which I'm at now) and I've tried 2.93 which proved stable after hours of Prime95/Orthos testing. But apparently 0.07Mhz more completely throws it off.

There's no reason not to raise the voltage, you can raise it just 1-2 steps if you want to be extremely cautious. The problem may be your RAM though, since as you raise the FSB the memory speed also increases, so if you don't adjust the memory voltage/timings then it will become unstable.

Ok, well right now it's linked, should I try doing it unlinked and raising the RAM speed incrementally.

what temps are you getting?
should be fine without an overvolt but just wondering. my guess is its the ram too. try raising its timings or giving it a bit of extra voltage if the cpu voltage isnt the problem.

I have that mobo. It has allot of overclocking holes. 3.2Ghz didn't work for me, yet 3.6 did. Try shooting it all over the the place until you find a spot that the mobo likes. My voltage is 1.455 right now, which generates only a little more heat.

My RAM wasn't in dual channel mode, so yea I'm gonna try again now.

um, how can I tell how much voltage the RAM has by default. It's just set to Auto in the BIOS so I can't see where it is.
