i was going to go with the e8400 but decided on the q6600 quad instead

nice choice its a good processor and will last you a long time.

What is it about the core 2 duos that makes them better than the X2's?

Both are incredible chips... A E8400 @ 4 GHz will outperform a Q6600 in most games. The Q6600 @ 3.6 GHz will edge the E8400 in video encoding. It just depends on how you use your system.

Back in the heydays of the Athlon XP, AMD was the undisputed king of the chip makers. Times have changed though, and Intel has regained the performance lead by a pretty sizeable margin.

For me, it's all about performance, so my machines run on Intel processors. If AMD ever regains the lead in processors, I'd go back in a heartbeat. Unfortunately it doesn't look like that'll happen anytime in the near future.
