Depends what you are duing. If all you do is basic stuff on your computer (a little gaming, internet, word processing) all you would really need is 512mb. Altough, if you do a good amount of gaming and/or video editing and photo editing, then you should get 1GB.
Heres an example, i used to only have 512MB ram, and when i played farcry, the game would lag. Then i upgraded to 1gb and it ran fine, since farcry uses between 400mb-500mb of ram. And if you want to know a plcae to get it, go to www.newegg.com costs about $35 for a 512 PC-3200 stick.

Try to look at it from a different point of view. Have you experienced problems or slowness before with your 512 MB RAM while working or performing anything on your PC??? If you did, then you should upgrade to the 1 GB, if not, then the 512 MB is fine, no need to upgrade, just leave the huge RAM upgrade to your next PC upgrade.
I personally am working with 384 MB RAM, were 512 MB before, but one 128 MB chip died. I am working fine and don't need any more RAM at the moment, I am just leaving the 1 GB for the next PC upgrade
