I worked on a laptop just over a month ago that did the same thing. It would boot as long as i had an external monitor hooked up to it but still would screw up from time to time. I told the customer that it most likely has been dropped and the internal video adapter was damaged, as I checked the cable from motherboard to laptop screen and everything was fine. At least theirs was about 5 years old and getting slow. They went and bought a new Toshiba at best buy.
