Exclamation Looking for a laptop

Im currently a CS student looking to upgrade from my current 3 year old HP laptop. Its great but its a bit behind obviously. So Im looking for one that will both meet my needs as a student in Computer science and some casual gaming. I am taking a 3D graphics class and need a higher powered machine. And I would like this laptop to last hopefully 2-4 years. My budget right now is anything below 1500 preferably. If anyone could help me out since Im not very aware when it comes to hardware so it would be great if to get some ideas.

Brands?
Processors? intel or AMD? clock speed?
how much ram? ( i was thinking at least 3 for the 32 bit OS)
Hard drive space I would like to have is probably 250 GB
cd/dvd burner, maybe blu ray
graphics cards? (KEY POINT. Since I do not know what much of the statistics in the specs that I have seen online actually mean. discrete memory, shared, chipset? need a lot of help with that...

I know Im asking a lot, I just want to make sure I get the most out of my money since itll have to last for a bit. Thanks so much in advance for any feedback!!!!

1st choice: 17" Gateway P-7811FX

2nd choice 15.4" Toshiba F55-Q502

Choose these based on specification, not brand...
Although the gateway one with only 200GB HDD, but it has P8400 + 9800GTS, hard to beat it with that price. And you can always buy an external harddisk anyway.
