I use gmail with filters and canned responses. Then I forward all my email from my personal .com address to that account. When I use an email, I will always change the whatever part of whatever@mydomain.com - since all of the handles cause the mail sent to my domain to end up in my gmail, I can use any handle I want. When the spam gets too much from that address, I create a filter which automatically rejects all email sent to that address, and sends the email right to Trash.
When you use your hotmail account on Windows Live Messenger, your friends will download virus on their computer, and the virus will find your email address on their computer. From there on, you will receive spam - because your friend doesn't know anything about not downloading viruses and trojans.
