This has been changed for some manufacturers, specifically WD and Seagate.
In the past 18 months, I've bought two brand new hard drives, a WD (OEM from Newegg) and a Seagate (retail from CompUSA). When I went to each company's website to look at warranty info, I was asked the model number and the serial number of each drive and was told when the warranty expired. I was never asked the date when I actually purchased the drives, nor was I asked the name of the retailer. Also, the paperwork included with the retail Seagate specifically instructed owners to go to the Seagate website for warranty info.
The only time the actual purchase date matters is for the seller's defective product return privileges, which is usually 30 days.
