you sure you dont just need to activate/format it? check your jumper settings, either master/slave or cable select

can i have a hard drive and cd/dvd rom on the same cable?

No I don't think you can do that, nor do I think they make cables that do that. Check your BIOS to see if the computer recognizes the hard drive but doesn't boot it up on startup.

you can't run a cd/dvd drive on the same IDE port as your HDD. if you only have one IDE port on your motherboard, you will have to get a SATA HDD or SATA CD/DVD drive. Id recommend that your get a SATA HDD and SATA DVD drive, for the simple fact that SATA of so much faster than IDE.

Oh, I didn't know you were running IDE. Yeah definitely look into getting SATA drives. Plus the SATA cables don't fill up your entire computer like the IDE cables do. =P

Yes you can. I've done it, as a matter of fact I have my DVD set up as master and HD as slave right now, the slave HD's got my Linux installation on it and it works fine.

Have you checked all the jumper settings? Do you have a 4-wire or 80-wire IDE cable? The older 40-wire cables won't work properly if you're using Cable Select, you have to set master and slave manually, which you should try out even if you're sure you have a 80-wire cable.

you absolutely CAN run an optical drive and a hard drive on the same IDE cable...
