Default how to find Rover the Search Companion?

How do I find the animated dog called Rover, the default Search Companion?
I've checked Start, then Search, and I can find a screen called Search Companion.
How do I make Rover (re)appear? I can't find Rover. How do I choose a different character - there is no dialog box with characters to choose from? Where is the dialog box?
The instructions say to click on Change preferences - but there is no Change preferences to be seen anywhere?
Thanks!

I was using Windows XP when I sent the message.
(at home I don't have XP and I know I can't use the characters on my own computer)
