Default Video card or not?

Just reciently my laptop is having issues and I can't figure it out.. The last things I did before the problem is, updated Itunes to 8.(whatever) and it did an auto download of SP3.. I heard from the guys i work with that SP3 sucks big ones? so un-installed SP3 and now my laptop screen just goes blank the same as before un-install? sometimes instant sometimes after an hour or so?

I did a restore to a previous date and it still does it.. I also within the last month did a full format and reinstalled XP.. oh ya its a dell E1705 with a 7200go video card.. I turned it off for a day or so and turned it back on and it still does it, thought maybe a heat issue but don't look that way..

I can boot up in safe mode and everything seems fine the screen is good, however I didn't just let it sit in safe mode for very long.. oh and also getting some vertical green lines on the XP boot screen almost everytime during normal boot..

This needs to be fixed or replaced, I will never buy another Dell as long as I live!!!! this is my second one due to the first being replaced for blue screen of death issues.. Any ideas would be great..

Thanks...

Im not sure i was think that it might be a power issue because i its not getting sufficient power it would have random restarting issues. kinda a similar effect but not the same. might be something with the os or like you said the video card

To me, sounds like a problem with the video card or the screen. You can check to see if it's the screen by connecting it to an external monitor. If that and the laptop screen go black, you might have outdated/incorrect video drivers.

If none of that works, it might be helpful if you could post pictures.

so I was playing with it a little yesterday and found that SP3 still shows in the system info? I tried to uninstall it through add/remove but it stated it was not found, but was still in there? I try and download SP2 and it wont do to some error.. (don't remember what it is off the top of my head) So I grab a SP2 disc that came with windows office 2003 and it gives me the same error? I'm lost.. lol

I do like the idea of hooking it up to the TV to see if its the screen or the card though!! great idea!! thanks.. That will help for sure.. Its probably software though as most of my issues seem to be.. I make silicon, I don't use them so well!! lol

ended up being the video card itself.. Dell tech showed up at my door the day after I called them (to check if it was still under warranty) and got a new video card and ac adapter and the little rubber feet on the underside of my laptop covered under warranty!! props to there support this time but I still will never buy a dell again..
