Default Will this kind of setup be good in two years? (best guess)

Hi all,

I'm on a tight budget for a while, so I have to make do with my current setup (see sig). But I'm wondering if my desired setup of today's computer world will be good in two years...because I'm probably going to have to go cheap then too. By then, all the components should be a few hundred dollars.

Here's my desired setup. Please comment on its viability in the future:

Intel E8400 or E8500 or Q6600
ATI 4870
4 GB RAM ...either 800 or 1066
640 GB HDD SATA 3
-- reuse my XtremeGamer sound card and Antec PSU from current setup
Antec Mid-tower case

It will be a fine setup in two years, I wouldn't expect it to play all the games maxed out two years from now but it will probably last about 3 years if you want to always be able to play on mid-high settings.

there shouldn't be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Hmm, my sig isn't showing up. But I currently have a Gateway GT5252 desktop, AMD 4600+, Nvidia 9600GT, 4 GB PC2-4200 533 RAM, XtremeGamer card, Antec TP3-550 PSU, 320 GB SATA II HDD (8 MB cache)

Your current setup is pretty good too, the gfx card isn't exactly high-end but I would expect your current comp to last a good 2 years while still being able to play games at decent settings (unless you use a hi-res monitor).

It's working OK for the games I play now (TES Oblivion mostly), get pretty high settings though I can't run a lot of mods. I ran 3dMark06 the other day, and during the GPU testing stages, it ran pretty well, 30-50+ FPS...but on the CPU portions, it literally crawled to 0-1. So obviously, my CPU is the bottleneck for games, right?

Maybe I'll just upgrade my CPU to a 5600+ or something and wait a little longer.

The new intel core i7s will be out in 1/2 years, so quad core will become commonplace.

If you buy a decent quad core atm, then in a few years, you should still have a good rig.
