Hello everybody,

I have written an aritcle to convince people of the advantages of Open Source Software like the Open Source OS: Linux.

I know that it is hard to stay objective about things like this, but i tried really hard to be objective. (I alway tried to prove my statements)
I have used MS windows for several years, I know windows 98-2000 and XP out of my head.
I have been using Linux since 1999. And I am quite experienced.
So I have been using both OSs and both Open Source and Closed Source proprietary software.
=> I think I am in a good position to judge.

Please read and rate the article.

Let me know what you think about it.

Thanks!
tuxer.

Ok agreed

Which bone head provided that second opion. Surely that is obvious!!

This use of stats goes along with the newspaper headline i saw about 2 years ago stating:
"50% percent of children are below the average reading age" <- well derrr!!!

Other wise a well written and well presented article. I'm not a heavy user of linux, have used it in the past though and i'm aware of it advantages and disadvantages. Nice coverage

thanks for your comment :-)

Have you ever used Solaris, FreeBSD, IBM OS/2 or another Unix based OS??

It's my opinion about that GNU and free softwares, if you are an educated and experienced on computer sciences it will make you better because you're free to design and decide what kind of OS do you want, even you can create it. But if you just want to enjoy, hmm....Windows and Machintosh give you the enjoyment.

I have never used any other Unix or BSD before.
I just like Linux more then i like BSD
and Solaris, IBM OS/2, HP-UNIX, ... i never had the chance to use them
but I would like to do so.

Have you used it before? what are the main differences?

And since i like the Freedom of free software that much, i wouldn't wanna live without. But Free isn't the only reason I like Linux (with my KDE desktop)

I think since KDE3.2, KDE has become very user friendly and very mature.
It can replace windows XP i think.

Before I would have suggested Windows to someone who hasn't much experience with computers
but now not anymore

My mother and father use linux...they arn't really experienced computer users :-)
Even my sister uses linux ;-)

btw: above all linux is a wonderfull development platform

cheers

What if you buy a digital camera or something along those lines, dont you have to search for special linux drivers?

Most camera's are just Mass Storage
This means it stores its pictures on a filesystem like a USB-stick or so
Camera's like this work!

Then you have some camera's who have theire own protocol.
95% percent of there are supported, you can search for them on the net (digiKam, gPhoto, ... are applications you need in this case)

At home we have 4 photo camera's (me, my brother, parents and sister)
they all work

it may occure that they don't work, but chances are high it will work in the future. (you just need to install a more modern version of you OS then)
If it doesn't work it is mostly the fault of the manufactury.

I hope I have answerded the question
bye
