Default laptop bios need help

hello all
i have an old laptop, ibm thinkpad 570, that is currently on windows 98 now i would prefer to be on windows 2000 or xp but i will need to do a bios update.
on the ibm website it states that you need to remove any docking station then insert the diskette to update, the problem is the only way this laptop has a floppy drive is though the docking station does anyone know if this will be ok?
also what is the chance of needing to replace the mobo after a failed bios update?
thank you all
