Default maybe hd issues

my wife has a lot of embroidery pictures but for some reason they disappeared. the only thing there is the embroidery directory. i checked the device manager for the 2nd hd and looks ok. i kind of suspected she deleted some how but says no. before i get into this mess i thought i would ask. everything in the embroidery directory is gone. loading my backup takes a while. 6-1/2 gig. how do you check a hd? im using xp pro if that means anything. thanks

Most drive manufacturers readily provide drive diagnostic tools like Western Digital's Life Guard tools. The software however may have placed the missing? files in another folder under the DocumentsandSettings>user name>Application Data>? folder rather then the one seen in the Program Files.

If you have the 3 digit file extension and name of one of the files simply use the search option on the Start menu bar to locate where that is. XP itself has the chkdsk(check disk) option for scanning for bad sectors. But if you suspect deletion try one of the free data recovery utilities like Recuva http://www.recuva.com/ for undeleting files if any were.

The check disk utility replaces the old scandisk seen with the 9X family. You still may want to go for the drive manufacturer's own tools however.

As for the missing files the search option generally works fast while looking in the MyDocuments folder as well as the App Data and finding them there would be typical of many apps. If they were accidently deleted Recuva or another tool like Active Undelete would be worth a try.
