Default Computer build

First off, I'm a total noob when it comes to building computers. I've been more of a software guy, but I want to get into hardware. I want a really good gaming computer from $1,000 - $2,000. Your help would be much appreciated.

I have a couple configurations that I've put together:

These are the same for both config.'s:
$166 Case: Lian Li PC-V1000
$93 PS: Antec True550 ATX 12V 550W w/Gold Plated Connectors
$80 RAM: Corsair 1GB PC-3200 DDR 400MHz
$32 CD Drive: Sony CRX320E DVD-ROM CD-RW
$26 Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2
$40 Speakers: Logitech X-530
$53 HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80 GB

Config. 1:
$218 Motherboard: ASUS P5AD2-E Premium
$230 Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
$445 Graphics: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 MB
-------
$1408

Config. 2:
$147 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI
$485 Processor: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4 GHz
$445 Graphics: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 MB
or
$720 2x EVGA GeForce PCX 6800GT 256MB DDR
-------
$1842

The most confusing part of choosing the parts was choosing the motherboard so suggestions on that would be helpful. Let me know what you think about these configs.

Thank you for your help.

Definitly go with Config 2. If this is a gaming computer go with the 2 video cards, except downgrade to a GT. Definitly get a Maxtor 10 instead of the seagate, it's more expensive, but I think you can handle the cost. GET A DVD BURNER. You'll regret it later if you don't.

$640 2x XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB (for the SLI)
The link you have for this takes you to a agp geforce 6800 GT. THat will not work in a SLI motherboard. You will need a PCI-e version.

Ok I think I fixed it.

If you have any totally new configurations or setups that would work better please feel free to post them.

Thanks

A few questions to you derek or anyone who knows:

Why would you recommend the Thermaltake Xaser III V1000A Black Chassis over my case? Besides that it obviously looks cooler.

Do I really need 2 73 GB hard drives?

What would be your second choice on processor thats not $815!?!?

Everything else is awesome! Thanks!
