I'll get right to the point. I'm building a new gaming system on a budget (almost anything will be better than that i have now) and i'm looking at a new motherboard to fit an AMD Athlon x64 3.1Ghz processor. I found a very nice one, but i read that the RAM compatible with the motherboard only works with an AM2+ socket, while my processor will only be an AM2. This seems slightly contradictory, seeing as how the board in compatible with both AM2+/AM2 sockets. How does this RAM compatibility work out and will i need to find a new board, or will i just need a different kind of RAM? Any suggestions welcome.
Here are the board and the processor. Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157141 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773 Thanks. |

You didnt give a link to the memory you want. But if your talking about DDR2 1066 support. The Phenom supports DDR2 1066. The Athlon you have will support up to DDR2 800. But either will run fine on the board, Athlon/Phenom or DDR2 1066/800. If you run a Athlon it will just backclock the DDR2 1066 it 800. I would suggest a better brand board.

Thanks. What other brands carry the same specs as that board at about the same price. I'm not really sure which ones are the best and most reliable. Also, is it worth the extra bit to get the DDR2 1066, or just go ahead and buy the 800 for a bit less. I don't plan on upgrading for a while.

I would pick a Asus/Gigabyte or even a DFI brand board. Are you planing on getting a AMD/ATI or Nvidia video card and I could show you a few boards?
As far as the memory, if they are pretty close in price I would go 1066 but if you find a good deal on 800 go for it.

I'm trying to make a system with an AMD processor, the one posted above (all i've had so far have been AMD's and they have not failed me yet, albeit not very powerful) and an ATI Sapphire 3870 graphics card. I'm looking for a motherboard around the $120-$130 price range. I would like 2 PCI 2.0 express slots, but one would suffice. I just want a motherboard that won't bottleneck my Graphics or processor. I would be very happy to have any of your suggestions.

Crossfire board. If you might run ATI cards in crossfire. I would probably go with this board.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128352 Another Crossfire board, only has the SB600 instead of the SB750. The SB750 is suppost to have better overclocking ability. But the SB600 does to. So if its not the most important thing this board is hard to beat for the price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136044 Single slot board, if you want to spend alittle less http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128081 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131340 SLI board, for Nvidia cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128339 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131323
