Windows Xp PRO only
You can remove the Recycle Bin Icon from your Desktop:

1) Go to START and select Run
2) Type GPEDIT.MSC
3) Navagate to User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Click on Desktop
4) On the right hand search " Remove Recycle Bin icon on the desktop " and double left click on it to ENABLE it.

Windows XP home better to use this TweakUI. You can download it here..

tweak UI is great for this. Also It really is just as simple as right click on your desktop, Arrange Icons by, Show desktop icons.

Hm...just activate your Active Desktop and there are menu for hide all icons on the desktop.

But your performance will be slower, it's ok if you only wish to get it rid, but for getting more fiture try to use Tweak UI.
