Default Norton scanning for 50 hours so far

Well, call me stupid, or just plain complacent. I had never had a virus attack a computer before, or at least that I knew about.

But this time, I had a pretty good idea I was in trouble. I made the mistake of trying to download files from Limewire.com. After attempting to install a couple of files, I noticed the computer became very slow.

Bottom line: Norton 09 fully updated had taken 50 hours so far scanning the computer. It says in it's dialogue box that over 15,000 viruses have been found. Or is that virus files? And there seems no end in sight. It just appears to be stuck scanning my windows/font/ ... file over and over again. It finds files named after movies and all kinds of things. It sickly even finds files named after anti-virus programs and security programs.

I'm willing to follow the advice about the malware software given in the stickies here at some point. But I just want to try to understand what is happening if anyone has some insight. That huge number of virus files makes me think this virus is self reproducing somehow. The virus really seemed to take over when I switched from my old brand to the Norton. Of course during that time I had no antivirus running.

Anyway, at what point should I just stop Norton and go with another plan?
One thing I wondered about too? Would it work to just remove any programs and files I want to keep onto an external harddrive and then start over with the original recovery disk so that basically I'm starting from scratch? Does that get rid of a virus or can the virus survive that ? I know, we don't know the virus, so how can we answer the question. I just want to come up with plan b and c right now before I do anything else. d

and norton churns away.....

thanks

Sounds like you are majorly infected. Download hijackthis and copy and paste the log that it displays. 2 programs you should run before running hijackthis is Combofix and Malwarebytes Antimalware program.

Get combofix here... http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Get malwarebytes program here...http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes...=dl&tag=button

50 hours? Oh, that's terrible. My suggestion is getting rid of the viruses in Safe mode, and that will be better.

Wow, what an experience. After posting this thread I had to do something fast so I did some more net searching and found the following web site ( I hope the moderators here don't mind me mentioning it.) http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

The advise there was just golden really. I followed their advise to the T and now I appear to be back to normal.

my process:

I started by defragging
then used CCleaner

Then downloaded

Superantispyware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Malwarebytes
Combofix
MGtools

Then one at a time I installed the above and ran the scans and deleted the viruses. And I had many viruses.

Oh, and after all that Norton ran normally and did find another virus the others hadn't found.

I didn't use hijackthis. Think I still need to at this point?

Early in this process I was thinking I may need to do something very drastic like reinstall the operating system, but after looking into what that would have been like, I think just cleaning it of viruses was easier.

My advise: if you want to use Limewire, better be sure your antivirus software is powerful and fully updated because most likely you will run into viruses there. I won't ever be using Limewire again.

Neil

Edit: I downloaded and ran hijackthis. Here's the log from that:
