Hey gang
I have this spare computer which I'm finally upgrading... before today I was just using the motherboard video and audio... it wasn't pretty. Anyway, i ordered up a new video card, sound card, DVD drive, and 80mm fan, all from newegg. The sound card, dvd drive and fan work great, but the video card causes trouble. When I hit the power button, fans spin and everything appears to start up, but then after 3-5 seconds, the system just shuts off instantly. I never even see text on the screen. I removed the sound card and dvd drive, and it still happens with just the video card. My first thought was that maybe it's underpowered with the new video card, but the sticker on the power supply makes it look like a 500W PSU. Any thoughts? This is supposed to be our media pc in our living room, and I'm anxious to set it up! Sound: Turtle Beach TBS-3300-01 Montego DDL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829118109) Video: ASUS EAH4670/DI/512M/A Radeon HD 4670 512MB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121274) DVD: SAMSUNG (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151173) *update* PSU: APEX AL-B500E -- I think it came with the case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817154015) Last edited by ADWill9; 12-13-2008 at 07:36 PM. |

did you buy the computer from a company or did you build it yourself. if you bought it from a company, a lot of times they will give you a PSU that this weak and will just be powerful enough for that computer. when you add something to it. the PSU cant handle it.
also how old is the computer. it might just be that the PSU is old now and not able to perform as it used to. there is this nice site that i go to, to see what PSU i will need for a computer. http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp just put in all of the components in there and it will tell you the minimal power needed. now another idea. not sure if it will work. but try disabling the onboard video. it could be just causing some problem. but i am not sure with this idea. but who knows it could just be this small thing causing this annoying problem.

hmmm... well... I built the computer, within the last year, I think (no more than 2 years old). That being said, when I look at the PSU, I'm almost certain that it did come with the tower case.
I suppose I could disable the onboard video, but then if that doesnt solve the problem, how could I get back into windows? i do not have another spare video card right now to supplement. |

you know the card could also be DOA. try putting it in another computer if you can to see if works there. if not then it is most likely DOA and just return it for another one.
and scratch my idea for disabling the onboard video.

rats, I was hoping you wouldn't say that... I don't really have access to another desktop, at least not one that I'd be able to test the card in.
hhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I was thinking about using a multimeter to test the voltage coming from the molex connectors, but this video card does not require external power, just power from the mobo |

i think the card is drawing more power than what the power supply can give

I only bought this card because it has an HDMI port, and I thought that when I buy an HDTV (not anytime soon) I could connect the two. Anyway I'm not attached to the HDMI at this point (I believe you can adapt DVI to HDMI anyway...).
So.... at this point, should I buy a new power supply, or return the video card and get a standard DVI video card? Do you think I'd have the same issues with power?? As I said before, my current power supply appears to be 500 watts. |

i am not sure but it might be better to get a better powersupply. that way your computer is more future proof. in other words. you wont have to worry that your power supply is not powerful enough to handle whatever you put in it.
but that is just my thought. anybody else have a better suggestion?

depends on how much the power supply can actually give, i know the max a card like that can use is 75 watts or something like that, otherwise go with an ati 4550, cheap, uses almost no power, and has dvi and hdmi
