Default What causes a computer to operate slowly....

.....and what do I need to do to clean it up? My computer will operate fine for say a month or two, then it starts slowing down. The only thing it's used for is surfing the internet and checking emails. I connect to the internet using cable (broadband). By slowing down I mean when I type in a web address, click on a link, or anything that requires loading a page, it takes forever, and that shouldn't happen with broadband. The only thing that seems to clear it up is reinstalling Windows (XP), but after a month or two, it starts slowing down again. Is there any way to clean the crap off of my computer without having to reinstall the operating system all the time? This is getting very old. Also, I use a wireless USB adaptor (Belkin) and even though I installed the software that came with it, I have to right click on the adaptor icon each time I restart my computer and do a repair on the adaptor to get it to work. What's up with that?
