Default New Computer problem

I recently built a new pc for my brother, the specs are:

Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L
3GB RAM
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200
coolermaster eXtreme Power 460W PSU
and an old graphics card (radeon x800)...

I am having problems installing an operating system. The computer will boot fine, but when I insert a CD to install either windows XP or Vista I will get one of a few errors, either a blue screen with a Page file error, a blue screen with a memory error or when it is installing an OS it cant copy a file accross.

The hard drive was taken from an old dell, it is a seagate 250gb... at the moment the problems point towards the HDD, but im still unsure...

does anyone have any ideas?

PS ill update this as I try things out...

Sounds as if it could be a ram issue.

Have you ran memtest86?

Have you ran a hdd test?

I formatted the HDD using my Computer, I then put it into the new pc.

When trying to install XP I can format the HDD, its when installing th OS thats the problem.

I havent thought about memtest86 yet, I thought it was prob a HDD issue, but ill try it and see what happens!

thanks!
