I'm running a core 2 duo e8500 and using realtemp I found that core 0's temp sensor was stuck. it would only read at 27 degrees. core 1's sensor wasn't stuck but read at about the same temperature anyway so i figured I was safe. After all I'm using a case with 2x230mm intakes(front&side), 1x230 exhaust(top) and 1x120 exhaust(rear). This thing moves air like crazy, and my computer room is quite cold. 10-15 celsius(50-60 fahrenheit)
Now when i use realtemp both sensors have a movement of 9-11 while it says typical movement is 3-15 so I guess it managed to, somehow, unstick itself. The problem is, now it says i'm idling at 58-65 and getting up into the upper 70's during gameplay. Is this just a messed up temp sensor or is it really running that hot and i didn't know it because it was stuck before? I do plan on reseating the cooler. it's a zalman9500. No overclocking done except to bring it up to stock specs. was a wrong multiplier and mhz when installed.it was 8x and 333 instead of 8.5 and 372. Also, the thermal paste i used was AS5, but it was the extra in the tube from an old build. probably 9months before my build. It was still liquid and normal looking but could that be the problem anyway? Last edited by revelation; 12-29-2008 at 12:10 AM. Reason: more info |

Try downloading CoreTemp and see if it gives better results.
Best test is touch the cooler...will find out if the temps are true or not based off that. Also touch the cooler and gently wiggle it...if there is a lot of give then its not tight enough and could be the issue. If your using stock cooling then I bet that is your issue....push pins was the stupidest invention Intel has ever came out with. Also I have used 2 year old AS5 and never had a issue...I am to cheap to throw stuff like that out. I have never had accurate temps from realtemp.

coretemp reads idle at 62. Seems warm to the touch. like a comfortable warm. the kind of temp you like to feel not hot at all. nowhere near the 150 F it says it would be. but it's hard to feel because there's stuff in the way. anybody know a way to check temps that aren't from the intel sensors? and i'm not using the stock cooler it's a zalman 9500. it should have no problem keeping the temps down at stock speed.
Tried gears of war to see what would happen. temps got to 77 in a short battle. seems dangerously high to me. If I do reseat the heatsink should I use new thermal paste. I mean just clean it off and reapply? Last edited by revelation; 12-29-2008 at 06:47 AM. |

Ok I've managed to seem to fix the problem. I pushed the heatsink down better and tighted a slightly loose screw. idling at 27 and 25 now. hope it sticks! Guess I just panicked when it happened so came to you guys for help.
