Default system restore problem

So last night I attempted to do a system restore on my Inspiron E1705. What I did exactly is reboot, and during the boot process held down ctrl and f12 key. This took me to a screen that asked whether or not I wanted to proceed with the restore, or simply reboot. I chose restore. Everything went normal except I realized I had my Lynksys router installation CD in my disk drive. During the process I opened the disk drive and took the disk out then closed it. Everything seemed fine, but about 2 minutes later, It said "system restore failed". Now everytime I start my laptop, instad of going to my desktop it goes to a black screen that says,
PBR 2...Done
A Disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart.

I bought this laptop from a friend and I do not have the CD it came with. And I was running Windows XP not Vista.
Can anybody help, or has anybody had this same problem. I need my laptop bad.
I will except emails, and they are forwarded to my Blackberry
Thanks
Chris
