Default Memorex DVD burner problem

I bought a Memorex 16X DL DVD+/-RW DVD Burner about a year ago. I used to have it in my old compaq, and then into the family computer, i was able to burn with it, but now im having some problems.

I bought a new computer (which is what my signature is) and when i tried to put a DVD in there (DVD Video or DVD Data) it would freeze up the computer and not load. And when i have a DVD in there when the computer boots up, XP never loads. I have it hooked up though USB now, and at least i can burn data on to a DVD, but i still cant use nero Recode to burn onto it, and i still cant have a dvd in there when it boots up.

I think the problem might have been when i upgraded the firmware, but im not postive, if someone could please tell me whats going on and what to do about it, or if there is a way to get the old firmware back.

First, when was the last time you clean the drive?

As for the issue with having windows boot up when you got a dvd in the drive, it most likely because you got your bios set it to boot up first from your dvd drive. Just dont have any cd or dvd's inside before you boot up or just change the order of your boot up from cd to hdd.

One or thing how many erros in a row have you had with your burner?

Actually, the only problems i have with it is DVD's not CD's, if i boot with a cd in there, it loads fine. And what do you mean exactly "how many errors have i had in a row"?

If you get to many errors on that drive windows will change the setting on your IDE. Will change from DMA mode to PIO. Check if this happen
