Default Overclockers...how long you prime for?

Hey guys,question is in title.

i heard to make sure your OC is compleatly stable you should be running prime 95 for at least 12+ hours is this right?

sureley this is alot of stress for the processor and would make it closer to death?

I don't bother, usually a 400FSB is fine for me (it has been for the last year or so) and I've had no crashes. I find real world work is much more realistic and can use the hardware in ways synthetic loaders do.

When I was overclocking and really messing with my hardware...The longest I run it might be an hour. Now I only run it for about 15 minutes just to monitor and check temp levels once in a while. The real test is throwing in a game and playing for a couple hours. You can pass a 1 week prime95 burn and have Crysis crash in 5 minutes.

I prime for 1 hour or till the 800000 test is done...then I call it.

Sure I could prime for 12+ hours....but I could also be gaming for 11+ hours or watching porn too. So why sacrifice when its not needed?

Exactly my theory. I maybe run Prime for about an hour, is that. Just to get the initial test out the way. I mean, I'd rather be testing my PC doing the things I want it to. Like gaming and general use. If it does all that I'm fine.

+1, +1 for avatar as well. MY everday computing is my Prime. If it crashes that means its not stable .

Can't speak for Prime, but I use OCCT for an hour to test for stability. After that, I just carry on with the normal games and programs and make sure everything runs OK.

Both synthetic stability tests and real-world apps should be used to test for extra assurance. I've done Orthos (which I believe is based off of Prime95) overnight before for 8 hours, but I think it's to discover underlying problems you might not otherwise see playing games. I've had settings that passed 5 hours, then failed, and later, I had problems booting. Gaming might not have detected this.

But yea, OCCT is more intense, quick and dirty (1 hour is usually enough), so I prefer to use that.
