Default Laptop - Wireless mouse/keyboard help

Hi guys,

Hope you can help. I am using my laptop purely as a desktop device so i have my external monitor plugged in etc.The problem i am having is with the wireless mouse and keyboard i have, it is a Microsoft Wireless multimedia keyboard/mouse 1.0a. When plug it in it recognises and says it is installed and ready to use but then nothing neither the mouse nor keyboard will work. The combo worked perectly on my pc and im really not sure what i am doing wrong.

Do i need to disable the laptops mouse pad etc. I assume i can use an extern;l mouse and keyboard on a latop? Really am a novice at all this so please be patient if i am been stupid.

I am running XP on a packad bell laptop if that helps
