Default Replacing dvd drive

The other day I was given an older laptop, a Gateway MX6453. Anyway, everything is fine with it except the dvd drive doesn't read or write cd's or dvd's. The drive shows up in My Computer, but whenever I click on it the computer freezes up. I've never gone about something like this before. Anyone know anything about replacing dvd drives? I would send it in to Gateway, but the warranty expired.
