Unhappy new memory problem

Hi, I just bought a new 512 SDRAM. I already had 2x 128. According to the ASUS motherboard should be able to handle up to 3 Gb. Now here's the problem. When I put in the 512, computer already crashes after the memory test . It shows to have 1g+, but only has 512. I also tried all 3 rams and then it shows, well, the 1g+256. Do I have a bad new mem, or could ther be a problem with the BIOS?
By the way. My system: P4 1.5 GHz. i845 chipset. Asus AX4BS-Pro motherboard.
Can anybody help me out here? Thanks

Try using that one stick of 512 alone, and see if it boots. if thats the case, one of your ram slots may have a problem or incompatibility.

One or more of the 512 sticks are probably bad, and I believe your board is an AOpen not an Asus
