Default what are heatsinks

I am making my computer and am seeing stuff about cpu heatsinks. I've seen the ones for ram but not for cpu's and wanted to know, how much do they run for and are they needed??

Yes most definitely! A heat sink draws heat away from a device and spreads it over a bigger surface area. You should never switch a pc on without a cpu heatsink. As for the price it depends on your cpu and how cool you want to go.

Its needed and pricetag is dependent on the make and model of the heatsink

without a heat sink your cpu can fry within 3 seconds. amd I claims 6 seconds I think, just to give you an idea of their importance. its simple CPU gives off heat, cpu has a small surface area, more surface area = more area for heat to spread = better cooling. a fan is a also just as important as heat sink ( than fan blowing over your hs)

if you dont even know what a heat sink is, should you really be building a computer? sry if this seems rude, but really...

most non-oem processors come with a heatsink.

He could simply be following a set of instructions (i.e., get this, install that blah blah) and just because he's asking what a HS is doesnt mean he's not gonna install it anyways.

You sure about that?
