G'day All ! Happy to be in your midst.

I have a Quantum Fireball Hard Drive ST4.3A with 1.5 GH free
of 4.3 Gigs from an old Sony PCV 150 that's 10 years old .
It originally had Win 95..now Win 2000 Professional and I
want to add same to an Emachines -T3256 as a Slave Drive. All
I need is to be able to access the files..notepads and
downloads.I have no intention of running applications like Excel,
Access , PowerPoint etc...but will want to copy my notepads to a
flash drive realizing that the HD is on the wane by virtue of age.


The OS of the Emachines is Win XP SP3.
Processor AMD Athlon(TM)XP32002.2.1 GHz ,
512 MB Ram.
Display Card ...NVDIA GeForce 4MX 4000
Bios..Phoenix Technologies ,LTD TCB432C.8/6/2004


I have tried researching on the net for any fatal pitfalls that may
result in just coupling up the old HD on the same IDE cable as
slave and booting the computer.I am getting mixed ideas and so
decided to post with the hope of getting some direction.

As long as you don't set the drive as the one to boot from in the BIOS you can move it into your computer and you shouldn't have any issues.

Well, first off: connecting any HDs to the same cable is perfectly safe. If you get something wrong, the HD(s) simply won't be detected, or the computer might now boot up, but you won't damage anything / lose any data.

All you need to do to make sure that your primary drive in the new computer is connected to the end of the IDE cable, and that your old drive is set as slave & connected to the middle connector. Setting drives as master (MA) / slave (SL) is done through jumpers; if your new drive has Cable Select (CS) enabled, just leave it and set the old drive's jumper to CS as well. Make sure everything's plugged in, boot up, and you should be able of copying off whateveer files there is.
