Default Star Wars light altering/controling program

i wanted to make a short few minute star wars movie for fun. does any1 know of a program that altars light in a movie so i can create actualy good looking lightsabers, spacecraft engines, blaster bolts, ect. (I know of the program AlamDV and it dosn't seem real enough)? Also and of those people that have seen episode III, do u know of a program to create backgrounds, they dont have to be masterpices just backgrounds such as space fights, lava flowing, ect.? I know in the movie they did it by having the actors act in front of a green screen then projecting the animation behind (like the weatherman), but is there also a way to do this with just your computer and a DV camara?? If anyone can help out that would be sweet. I am willing to spend lots of time on this (even a year or so if I would have to).

I dont know how exactly you want to go about doing it but Lightwave can do lightsabres pretty readily. Thats the full CGI approach (and IMO easier to work with once you've modelled everything). If you want it from a video composition program, look at plugins for After Effects
